Shepton Mallet Prison
(also historically known as Cornhill) in Somerset, England, is widely documented as one of the most haunted locations in the United Kingdom. Originally established as a House of Correction in 1625, the prison endured nearly 400 years of brutal history, including starvation, lethal disease outbreaks, torture, and multiple executions. Before its closure in 2013, it operated as the oldest working prison in the country, once even housing London’s notorious Kray Twins.
Today, the site operates as a dark tourism attraction where visitors, paranormal investigators, and staff members report intense supernatural occurrences.
Famous Ghosts of Shepton Mallet
The prison's long, dark history has left behind several well-known resident spirits:
  • The White Lady: Her ghost is primarily reported haunting A-Wing. According to local lore, she was a prisoner who murdered her husband/fiancé in the late 17th or 18th century. The night before her execution, she requested to wear her wedding dress. The following morning, guards found her dead in bed with no marks on her body, leading to the conclusion that she died of a broken heart. Visitors and staff still report the sudden, unexplained smell of her sweet perfume wafting through the wing.
  • The Dishevelled Lady: A spirit seen wearing a black cape, frequently observed wandering around the premises while muttering inaudibly, supposedly searching for "fern".
  • Private Lee Davis: A military prisoner executed by firing squad or hanging while the facility served as an American military prison during World War II. His restless spirit is said to walk the corridors, and one tour guide even reported sustaining a phantom cigarette burn on his hand while speaking about Davis's execution.
  • The Night Watchman: A former staff member from the 1970s who was notorious for tormenting his night-shift colleagues. He is believed to still linger, often seen as a tall, shadowy figure wearing a top hat near the Hard Labour Yard.
Most Active Paranormal Hotspots
The prison contains specific zones known for heightened supernatural energy:
  • C-Wing: Noted for its oppressive, heavy atmosphere. Visitors frequently report disembodied whispers, sudden drops in temperature, and the unsettling sensation of being watched from the shadows.
  • The Execution Room: The location where judicial executions took place. It is associated with phantom footsteps pacing behind visitors and invisible forces causing sudden emotional distress or unease.
  • Cell 19: A specific cell where a heavy iron door famously slammed shut by itself in front of a patrolling night guard, accompanied by a disembodied whisper telling him to "Get out!"
  • The Unmarked Graves: The final resting place for many executed criminals located within the prison grounds, often triggering feelings of overwhelming anxiety for people walking nearby.
